2012 BUTTON DESIGN WINNER
The Harbor Days
Steering Committee is happy to announce that Pam Lein
created the winning design for the 2012 Harbor Days button. Pam's
design was chosen from over a record 200 entries!
The Steering Committee (approximately 20 members) voted for their favorites
without knowledge of who the artists were.
The buttons can be purchased at a variety of merchants and from our volunteers
throughout the festival.
The cost is $2 and the buttons are used in place of admission fees for many of
the festival events.
The proceeds from the sales support Harbor Days.
We congratulate Pam and know she will enjoy all of the "perks"
that come with being our Harbor Days button artist.
We thank all who entered the contest.
2011 GRAND MARSHALLS

Rich and
Carol Smith
Rich
and Carol have 4 children: Rick, Amanda, Kurt and Suzanne; and 6 grandchildren:
Alicia, Jon, Jeramy, Je’Lana, Brianna, Courtney. They raised their family in Garden
City and Livonia where they ran their family business. In 1995 they purchased a
summer “get-away” in Elk Rapids and then moved here permanently in 2000. They
immediately became very active in the community. One of Carol’s duties for many
years as a Lion had been to run the Queens Luncheon following the Harbor Days
parade. She also spends countless hours volunteering for the Chamber of
Commerce in many capacities. It’s not unusual to see her car in front of the
Chamber building working tirelessly on one project or another. Her dedication
to the organization of the craft shows alone has generated much needed revenue
for the Chamber. These are just a few things Carol has been involved with.
Rich’s work has also been invaluable to the Chamber of Commerce sitting on
several committees, managing the website and organizing the Harbor Days parade
for many years to name just a few. Rich has also taken on some important roles
in their church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Rich and Carol continue to put in tireless volunteer hours even while on
vacation. They will respond to e-mails and phone calls and handle projects
remotely. Office hours mean nothing to them, they work all hours, seven days a
week. They have travelled extensively and even promote Elk Rapids during their
travels. They support local fundraising efforts financially as well as
participate in events whenever possible. We thank this civic minded couple for
their dedication and congratulate them on receiving this well-deserved recognition.
Harbor Days needs many, many volunteers
to be successful.
If you could be of assistance, please fill out and submit the
volunteer application.
